Edgar "Mutt" Ford
Mutt Ford was a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Coach Ford was a head football coach in the Mesa School District from 1945 to 1966. Many of his great seasons were before the era of the AIA playoffs. Coach Ford's Mesa Jackrabbits, however, won the 5A State Title in 1960, and his Westwood Warriors won the State Title in 1964. Westwood was also the state runner-up under Ford in 1966. At the time of his retirement Coach Ford had the most wins by a high school coach in Arizona history with 245. An extensive archive search also finds that Coach Ford was successful in basketball, as well. Ford's 1937 Peoria Panthers won the State Championship and his 1946 Jackrabbits at Mesa won the 1946 State Title. Coach Ford and fellow Mesa High School Hall of Famer, Steve Coutchie, both won mutltiple State Titles in football and basketball. Counting football titles before the Arizona playoffs were instituted, Ford's football teams won 8 State Championships. Coach Ford passed away in April of 1975.
