Frank Denogean

Frank spent two years as an assistant basketball coach at Coronado and Scottsdale High Schools before accepting the girls’ head basketball coaching position at St, Mary’s High in 1983. His teams had a 70% winning percentage, were State Champions four times, State Runner-Up twice and Region Champions 14 times. He was named State Coach of the Year five times, Region Coach of the Year 14 times, and in 2007 was honored as the National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s Region 8 Coach of the Year.

Rachel Matakas

Rachel Matakas has been coaching in the State of Arizona for 20 years. She is currently coaching at Valley Vista High School where her current record is 326-106 for an 87% winning average. Coach Matakas’s teams have had the opportunity to attend the state playoffs the last 13 out of 15 years. Her teams have gone on to win five state titles in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022, as well as seven Region Championships.

Bill Gollihare

Bill Gollihare's girls' head basketball coaching career began at Peoria High School in 1980 and he coached the Panthers for the next 18 years.  He moved to Deer Valley for the next 8 years and retired.  Joy Christian High School managed to lure Bill out of retirement where he coached another 5 years.  Bill retired again in 2013 capping a 31 year coaching career.  Bill's teams were Arizona State Basketball Champions three times; (twice at Peoria, 1988 and 1989), and once at Deer Valley in 2006.  His teams were region champions 11 times and he finished with 513 career wins with his lifetime w

Karen Self

Karen Self has been the head girls' basketball coach at Seton Catholic Prep for 31 years and running.  Coach Self's teams have won 83% of their games over those years.  The Sentinels have won a remarkable 15 Arizona State Girls' Basketball Titles during Coach Self's continuing reign.  Not only have they won 15 titles, they were the Arizona State Runners-Up 4 more times (17 appearances in the Title game in 31 years), and were the region champs 30 consecutive years.

Joe English

Joe English has spent all but one year of his coaching career at Chaparral High School.  He was an assistant coach the first year and the next 25 years as the head coach.  Coach English' record was a sparkling 73% winning percentage with 480 total wins.  His Firebirds were the Arizona State Girls' Basketball Champions in 1978, 1996, and 2001.  They were also the State Runners-Up in 1993, 1994, 1995, 2000, and 2003.  The Firebirds were also Regional Champions 10 times during that span.  Some of English's best teams had records of 26-2, 27-1, 32-2, and 33-1.  The Arizona Republic honored Coac
