Frank Denogean

Frank spent two years as an assistant basketball coach at Coronado and Scottsdale High Schools before accepting the girls’ head basketball coaching position at St, Mary’s High in 1983. His teams had a 70% winning percentage, were State Champions four times, State Runner-Up twice and Region Champions 14 times. He was named State Coach of the Year five times, Region Coach of the Year 14 times, and in 2007 was honored as the National High School Athletic Coaches Association’s Region 8 Coach of the Year.

Rich Carlberg

Richard began coaching high school baseball as an assistant coach at Coconino High School in 1976 and finished with a 24 year stint as the head coach at Sunnyslope High School. He posted a remarkable 418 wins and a winning percentage of 60%. His teams were Region Champs three times and won the State Title in 1996. He was Arizona State Coach of the Year twice and the National High School Athletic Coaches’ Association Region 8 Coach of the Year in 1996.

John Kashner

John’s 20 year high school head coaching football career began at Casa Grande Union High in 1979. He accepted the head coaching position at Flowing Wells High in 1988. In 1997, he was named head coach at Coolidge. His teams posted an overall winning percentage of over 50% and were Region Champions four times. John was named Region Coach of the Year three times and Area Coach of the Year four times. In 1996, he served as head coach of the State All-Star Game and served twice as an Assistant for that game.

Mike Morgan

Coach Mike Morgan graduated from Coolidge H.S. in 1974.  Mike attended Central Arizona College and then Northern Arizona University both on track scholarships.  After receiving his degree in 1980 Mike was an assistant at Apache Junction and Chinle.  Morgan took his first teaching/coaching position at Ganado HS finishing with a 52-18 record in football. The Ganado Hornets made the play offs 6 out of the 7 years Morgan led the program. Coach Morgan then took a teaching and coaching job at St. Johns H. S. in 1988.  Morgan’s St.

Rachel Matakas

Rachel Matakas has been coaching in the State of Arizona for 20 years. She is currently coaching at Valley Vista High School where her current record is 326-106 for an 87% winning average. Coach Matakas’s teams have had the opportunity to attend the state playoffs the last 13 out of 15 years. Her teams have gone on to win five state titles in 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, and 2022, as well as seven Region Championships.
