William "Herk" McDermott
William "Herk" Mc Dermott coached basketball for 26 years at Kingman, North High School, and East High Schools. Coach McDermott was always one of the most involved members of the coaches association. Coach McDermott was the secretary-treasurer of the Arizona Coaches Association from 1964-67 and attended the National Coaches Convention in Washington, D.C, in 1967. McDermott coached in the ACA All Star basketball game in 1969. Herk was the ACA All Star game dedicatee in 1972. He was most often involved with JV level basketball teams at North, but always pitching in to help the Coaches Association and later the Hall of Fame Association with various activities. Coach McDermott was once selected as the Phoenix Coaches Associaton's Man of the Year. Herk is probaly best known for two things after his retirement: 1) his fabulous style of print/cursive writing in his annual golf event news letters, and 2) he organized the coaches and later the hall of famers golf tournament for 39 consecutive years. Herk stepped down from his golf tournament duties in May of 2015. Coach also served on the Phoenix Coaches Association and was selected as their Man of the Year in 1967. Coach McDermott was inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007. Coach McDermott passed away on February 16, 2016. The Executive Board of the Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame has honored Herk by naming their annual golf event The Herk McDermott Open.
