Paul Franklin Petty

Paul Petty was a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Coach Petty taught football at Hardin-Simmons University and New Mexico State University.  In the high school ranks, Paul coached at 3 schools in Texas, 6 schools in Arizona, 1 in New Mexico, and retired from coaching in St.

Ray Mitokawa

Ray Mitokawa was a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Ray was head football coach and athletic director for 24 years at Peoria and 2 years at Cactus High Schools.  His football teams were 134-63-10 during that span.  Coach Mitokawa's Panthers were the State Runner-Up in 1965. Coach Mitokawa finished his career as assistant principal in Peoria and the first principal of Cactus High School.  The sports complex at Peoria High School now bears the Mitokawa name. 

Al Munoz

Al Munoz was a great athlete in high school and college.  Boxing was probably Al's first love in athletics.  Coach Munoz served in WWII and was the All Services Heavyweight Boxing Champion.  Later in life Al became an internationally acclaimed boxing official, refereeing major bouts around the globe.  In addition to the Arizona Coaches Hall of Fame, Al is also a member of the Arizona Boxing Hall of Fame, Top Rank Hall of Fame, and the Arizona Hispanic Sports Hall of Fame.  Two of Coach Munoz' six children ended up in public school coaching, as well.  Mr.

Larry Hart

Larry Hart was a highly successful football coach at Flowing Wells in Tucson, Arizona.  His Caballeros were State Runners-Up 5 times and were the undefeated State Champions in 1975.  Coach Hart was a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Larry once served at the Coaches Association President.  He is also a member of the Flowing Wells Athletic Hall of Fame and the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame.  Coach Hart coached in two of the ACA All-Star football games and was the head coach of the original Arizona vs.

Edgar "Mutt" Ford

Mutt Ford was a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Coach Ford was a head football coach in the Mesa School District from 1945 to 1966.  Many of his great seasons were before the era of the AIA playoffs.  Coach Ford's Mesa Jackrabbits, however, won the 5A State Title in 1960, and his Westwood Warriors won the State Title in 1964.  Westwood was also the state runner-up under Ford in 1966.  At the time of his retirement Coach Ford had the most wins by a high school coach in Arizona history with 245.  An extensive archive search also finds that Coach Ford was succe

Vern Friedli

Although he coached at Morenci, Casa Grande, and San Manuel, the name Vern Friedli is synonymous with Amphitheater High School.  Coach Vern was the Panthers head football coach for 36 years.  At the time of his retirement (2011-12), Coach Friedli had 331 wins (now 2nd place all time) that has only been exceeded by Paul Moro who won his 332nd game in 2016.  The Panthers were State Champions in 1979, and State Runners-Up in 1990 and 1997 under Friedli.  Friedli coached in 3 ACA All Star Football games.  He was named the Phoenix Press Box Association Coach of the Year in 1979.  Coach Friedli b

Allen "Buck" Hall

Coach Hall is currently on the Executive Board of the Coaches Hall of Fame and has served as the president of the organization from 1994 to 2019 (25 years).  Coach Hall began his coaching career at Tolleson Union High School in 1964 as the Varsity Baseball Coach.  Coach Hall moved over to Maryvale High School in 1968 assisting in football and basketball.  Buck became the head football coach at Maryvale High School in 1980.  Before his retirement from football in 1993, Coach Hall's Panthers reached the state playoffs in 10 of his 14 years at the helm.  Three of his Maryvale Panthers made it

Steve Coutchie

Coach Steve Coutchie was a charter member of the Arizona High School Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984.  Coach Coutchie was the head football coach at Mesa High School from 1928 to 1945.  Coach Coutchie's Jackrabbits were the State Champions in football twice and his basketball teams also won three State Championships.  Coutchie and fellow Mesa High School Hall of Famer Mutt Ford both won multiple state titles in football and basketball.  Coach Coutchie was the head football coach at Arizona State University in 1946.   Steve Coutchie passed away in 1983 a year before the HOF was created.

Earl Clupper

Earl Clupper was a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Hall of Fame in 1984.  Coach Clupper coached for 34 years with 22 of those being at South Mountain High School.  Coach Clupper had a 66% winning percentage over all those years, and his Rebels won the State Title in 1959 and were the runners-up in 1976.  Coach Clupper also received the Distinguished Service Award Certificate from the National Federation of Interscholastic Officails for 25 years of wrestling officiating.  Coach Clupper was inducted into the National High School Athletic Coaches Hall of Fame in 2000.

Thomas "Alva" Hawkins

Thomas "Alva" Hawkins was a great coach from a great athletic school, Coolidge, AZ.  Coach Hawkins taught 10 years in Oklahoma before moving to Coolidge.  He stayed there 28 more years.  Coach Hawkins won back to back football titles in 1967 and 1968.  Coach also won the Boys Track Title in the spring of 1969.  Coach Hawkins was a veteran of WWII and managed to get his education through the GI Bill following the war.  Alva was one of many that served all of us so we could coach high school sports in a free country--which would put him in any American's Hall of Fame.
