Gil Trejo

Gil Trejo was a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Hall of Fame.  Gil graduated from Phoenix Union High School and Arizona State University.  Coach Trejo played pro baseball and ended his career in the New York Yankees organization.  Coach Trejo's Maryvale Panthers won him State Titles in 1968 and 1975.  His Panthers were the State Runners-Up in 1980 and 1983. The Panthers finished with a record of 323-146 with 11 league championships during that span.   Coach Trejo's Camelback Spartans were State Runners-Up twenty years before in 1962.  In 1973 Gil was selected the District 6 "Coach of

Truman Williamson

Truman Williamson was a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Coach Williamson remained a Varsity Head Football Coach well into his 70's.  The football field in Sierra Vista bears the Williamson name. 

James "Doc" Van Horne

James "Doc" Van Horne was a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Coach Van Horne won 13 state titles at Tucson High School in a career that spanned 1925 to 1959.  Coach Van Horne's Badgers won State Track Titles in 1927,28,36,38,39,40,41,45,46,47,48,49,and 1953.  One of his athletes, Joe Batiste, set the National High School Record for the high hurdles in 1939.

Al Van Hazel

Al Van Hazel (Coach Van) was a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Coach Van Hazel's Casa Grande Cougars won the State Track Title 11 times in his 22 years as the head coach.  Seventy-six youngsters under Coach Van Hazel won individual state championship titles.  Four of those 76 athletes became the National Champions in their respective events.   In addition, Coach Van Hazel was the head football coach at Casa Grande for 16 years and his teams won another 3 State Championships.  Coach Van was also inducted into the Arizona Track Coaches Hall of Fame in 1970, th

Anthony "Skip" Schifino

Coach Skip Schifino was a charter member of the Arizona High School Coaches Hall of Fame.  Coach Schifino devoted 30 years of his life to  coaching baseball.  His Hayden Lobos were the State Runners-Up in 1955 and his Scottsdale Arcadia Titans were the State Runners-Up in 1961. One of Schifino's Hayden baseball teams was a State Champion.  Skip's overall coaching career record was 326-235-5 at both schools combined.  Coach Schifino was an avid golfer.  He passed away in the Phoenix area in 2006.

Paul Franklin Petty

Paul Petty was a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Coach Petty taught football at Hardin-Simmons University and New Mexico State University.  In the high school ranks, Paul coached at 3 schools in Texas, 6 schools in Arizona, 1 in New Mexico, and retired from coaching in St.

Royce Youree

Royce Youree was a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Coach Youree was a three year starter in basketball at Arizona State University from 1955-1958.  He was the first Sun Devil to score over 1,000 career points.  Youree sank two free throws with no time left to defeat Arizona by 2 points to earn ASU the Border Conference title in 1958.  Following college, Youree played 3 years of professional baseball.  He started his coaching career in 1964 at Maryvale and soon moved to East High School.  Coach Youree's East teams won State Championships in 1971,73,75, 80, an

Ray Mitokawa

Ray Mitokawa was a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Ray was head football coach and athletic director for 24 years at Peoria and 2 years at Cactus High Schools.  His football teams were 134-63-10 during that span.  Coach Mitokawa's Panthers were the State Runner-Up in 1965. Coach Mitokawa finished his career as assistant principal in Peoria and the first principal of Cactus High School.  The sports complex at Peoria High School now bears the Mitokawa name. 

Dick McConnell

Dick McConnell is a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Coach McConnell's career lasted 42 years with 40 of those years in Arizona.  His record is an amazing 776-320 with 4 State Championships,  and 16 (yes, sixteen) appearances in the semifinals of the state tournament.  Coach McConnell is also a member of the National High School Coaches Hall of Fame (2008) and the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame (1990).  Tucson Sahuaro High School has honored the career of Coach McConnell naming the school gymnasium after him.

Gerald 'Wimpy" Jones

Gerald "Wimpy" Jones was a charter member of the Arizona Coaches Association Hall of Fame.  Wimpy first coached at Duncan High School from 1945-50 where his teams went 79-42.  He moved on to Coolidge where his Bears went 143-71.  His last stop, Phoenix Union, the Coyotes were 244-87.  Coach Jones led the Phoenix Union Coyotes to State Championships in 1960, 1961,1967, and 1968 in boys'basketball.  PUHS was also the State Runners-Up in 1971.  Coach was also an outstanding softball pitcher, throwing 45 no-hitters in his career.  Wimpy passed away in 2013 at 93 years of age in Phoenix.
